data protection

data protection
safeguards relating to the use and storage of personal information about a living person, which is legally covered in the UK by the Data Protection Act 1998 (which implements a European Directive, 95/46/EC). Under the Act individuals have a basic right to control information stored about them; this means that information about the health of an individual cannot be used or passed on to others without the knowledge of that individual, who can then object. Users of the information are required to be registered with a local data controller, who in turn must inform the Information Commissioner, who enforces the rules. Individuals about whom information is held can view a copy of the information relevant to them and demand to have inaccurate or misleading information amended. Specific exceptions include information held by the police or relating to state security and medical research, but not medical information that may affect employment or promotion.
